Oh, how short the time is from Halloween to Thanksgiving. This coming week we'll be making the biennial trip to Ogunquit for our Thanksgiving celebration with my side of the family. This tradition to Southern Maine is a bit newer, only occurring over the past several years, but one I already greatly enjoy. What are you afraid of? Darla Jackson. (2005)

I've been a long-admirer of Darla Jackson's animal sculptures (Etsy shop alfalfa loves me) - in particular a bunny donning a crow mask entitled What are you afraid of? I was very excited to hear that in an effort to raise funds for a community sculpture studio and space, she was making a multi-edition of said bun-bun as a babe as a reward level for donating $50. True altruism is the act of selfless giving, but I won't say no to welcoming this baby bun into my home. (Did I mention the price of the piece, titled It started at a young age..., shown below in progress, will go up to $250.00 after the 19th of October, at the end of the fundraising event?)

Vintage metal toolbox from Alexander + Penelope

I've been thinking about this for awhile now. Contemplating. Debating. Ruminating. Hashing and rehashing - if that makes any sense. I really want to go back to school. I want to go for metals and jewelry. You see I went for painting and art history earning my BFA. I don't regret what I did before as it plays a large role in my life now and I believe, no - I know - it gives me a unique perspective as a jewelry artist, but I did took this path with little thought that this would be the direction my life would take. And I don't want to just go anywhere - I want to go where I went before - the Savannah College of Art and Design; for in my mind, it is one of the top schools, if not the top school. I want to be in a highly competitive environment, fast-paced, with challenging assignments and the best equipment available to me.

I don't want to only take apprenticeship classes from already established (or not-so-well-established) local artists and designers. I want to learn from the best and be surrounded by the best.

I feel stuck sometimes with my work, limited by what I am able to feasibly teach myself.

I want to return to school because I want a bigger toolbox. I want to know more, have more skills, learn more techniques and grow a wider knowledge base.

But my life and my home an my family are here and I love them. And these urges and dreams seem so selfish in someways.

I have long debated what is too much to share - or who actually will care (or who really reads my posts). However from some of you I have become quite close with and talk with one on one and I have gotten some really good advice from. And I think, maybe I can help some of you in turn, if I share my experiences and open up a dialogue.

For much of my life, and over the past few years even worse so, I have suffered from terrible, often debilitating migraines. Up until the past year or so because of a preventative medication they could last for over a week and I could, at times, get a couple a month. I was living half my life in excruciating pain. I've experienced 'complex migraines' (where part of your body goes numb) and what I believe are cluster headaches (also known as 'suicide headaches.') There are a couple of food allergies I have (wine for one) and hereditary factors as well, though I've never been quite able to determine why exactly I get them every time.

This all seemed very closely linked, whether by correlation or causation, at the same time when, after dealing with extreme exhaustion and insisting on having my hormone levels checked (after my thyroid and sugar levels were fine) that I discovered that I had literally zero levels of testosterone and almost no estrogen. From what I've read, testosterone levels, in some case studies, have been linked with cluster headaches. I had been hearing on radio programs and reading a lot about the prolonged use of oral contraceptives and the impacts that they can have on the endocrine system; that the persistent use of them can shut off the production of testosterone in some people. I'm taking part in a natural hormone replacement therapy now.

The extremely high dose of the preventative medication I seem to need to be on has its drawbacks - it makes me, how do I put this, stupid. I honestly feel like I am going through early onset Alzheimer's. I write words backwards, forget what I'm doing half-way through doing it, put the groceries away in the wrong place, I forget what I'm saying when I'm talking, I draw blanks when asked a question all the time; and worst of all I'm aware of these 'short comings' and it so so frustrating. I once took pride in my quick-witted charm. But, my migraines, though they do still exist, are about one-third the strength they used to be and not nearly as frequent.

And now, still I feel tired when my hormones get low, because my endocrine system may never work quite right again and I'm not sure if I will need to take the migraine preventative medication forever. The frustrating haze I feel like I'm in is suffocating, deafening at times and is so difficult to describe to anyone else.

Savannah retour

This past weekend I returned to Savannah to visit with a few friends and see the fabulous shopSCAD. It has been nearly three years since moving from Savannah and I miss it terribly. I fell in love my first visit with the simple yet elegant layout of the downtown district and the way the 18th and 19th-century architecture mixes with modern and post-modern examples. It was nice to see some of projects that had been spoken of finally be completed, such as the restoration and rejuvenation of the old fort in Forsyth Park. In my absence over the past thirty or so months, buildings came up and buildings went down. Bars, restaurants and shops had come and gone. Savannah was the same in some ways but it was also very different. This weekend also marked a big anniversary for me: ten years from when I began to attend school at Savannah College of Art and Design (2001-2005); a school that is undeniably part of the heart and soul of Savannah.

I would like to thank those who took the time to take the recent survey (link in the bottom paragraph) I sent out about Lee Ohio Designs. The answers, feedback and insight from the standpoint of a client and follower has proved to be invaluable and I cannot express how much I appreciate it. I've decided to address some of the issues raised here and I will do my best to implement many of the suggestions as soon as possible.

The Issue of Price
The biggest issue raised to me by far was the lack of a consistent body of work priced under $250.00 and another under $100.00. It was brought to my attention that a couple of years ago I was producing much more work within these two ranges; and the work that I was producing was much more varied (not just pearls). I have been somewhat aware of this issue myself, but not to the point that it has been bothersome, though now it is. I gradually moved away from creating this type of smaller, yet still lavish, work after I first introduced it in the First Frost Collection of 2009, because this is when I began to really see my work being the 'inspiration' for others. It was my natural instinct to move toward more sumptuous, complicated, more difficult-to-replicate pieces and higher-end designs. In addition to my compositions becoming more complicated, I also became more fascinated with use of rare and gem-grade materials only, thus the price also increased.

I am working on this and will re-vamp and re-introduce a line of $80 to $300.00 work that will be as undeniably fabulous as the rest of my work.

The Perception vs. Truth of Value
Another issue brought up often in the comments block of the survey was the question about, not the questioning of, why my work often costs more than that of many of the designers on Etsy. First I must point out, as some of you may not know, that Etsy is not the only 'outlet' for my business. I am a professional artist and Etsy is just one of the venues that I sell my work through. Secondly, I would like to change the diction used, swapping out cost for worth and have a conversation about value. Jewelry is one of those rare commodities, like most arts, that truly is an investment. The precious metal market is a perfect example of this: When I began purchasing gold a few years back it was under $700.00 an ounce, today it is over $1,825.00 an ounce and rising.

Simply stated, without comparing what I use for material quality compared to what others use, the price of my work is dependent solely on the cost of the materials I put into it and the time I devote to creating them. Some designs are, yes, seemingly devastatingly simple yet I may use, for example, use a type of pearl that is incredibly rare (relatively speaking, of course) and I will employ solid karat gold. As I stated with the current price of gold, gold is becoming cost-prohibitive, and that is frightening. The addition of vintage and antique items - many solid gold or of rare or unique origin - adds to my cost (my investment).

Many of my designs will take weeks or even months to finish. I don't sit down and work on one piece from beginning to end and I am far from a machine, pumping out one piece after another day in and day out. I prefer to think of myself as an insane conductor of sorts, trying to orchestrate many concerts at the same. One concept may take only hours to complete while one composition may sit on my desk for six months, waiting for its turn.

My ridiculously high standard for materials often gets in my way as well; such as the fact that any imperfect stone in a strand (cracked, nicked, etc will be discarded), this greatly increases my cost of creation. I will say that the quality of the materials I use is bar none. And my penchant for the rare or unusual adds to both the artistry and value, but also the cost. I know that not everyone operates this way, but I do. And quality is one area in which I will not compromise. Each and every piece is an investment of my own money and time; every design is not only a creation, but a risk.

The Blog
You were all over about this one! Some wanted more of this, some less of that. But no one wanted none of anything that I wrote as a suggested topic, which is good. I'm going to have to do a little bit more specific number-crunching to figure out exactly what direction I'm going to take the blog in but one thing is for sure, almost everyone wanted to see more about jewelry inspiration. So, I'll have to work on that one.

The Website
It surprised me to see this in the comments section a couple times because I didn't address it in the survey. But sure enough, it popped up. Some of you expressed concerns about it being under construction. And I assure you, I will get to it. It is on my list, just not at the top. And it probably should be at the top... I just do all my web editing myself (along with making the jewelry, photographing, listing, e-mailing, Facebook, Blog, bookkeeping, taxes, phone calls, buying stock...) I know, excuses, right? You are right. I will do it. That's my goal. Fully-functioning website by the end of September - or at least make it so it doesn't lamely say 'under construction.'

Custom Orders & Miscellaneous
A lot of concerns were raised about the fact that I don't carry a specific item. Some of these things could be solved by custom orders. I'm not sure if my clients are aware that I am happy to accept custom orders, but I am! I think I need to work on getting that message out there. For example, I am more than happy to take on an order for bridal or bridesmaid jewelry - and have in the past.

A couple other people raised the issue of ear clips. I have come across some amazing vintage ear clips that I would love to work with (embellish), much as I've done in the past with brooches. However I have thought the market to be quite small for clips and screw-backs, so I haven't made the investment in these pieces. Also, I can make interpretations or variations of certain pieces that can't be changed to clips.

Lastly, for now, the issue of size and reference came up. I've been struggling for a bit to come up with a way to portray size without the use of (in my opinion) often cheesy mannequins or whatnot. I'm working on a way to take artistic, pleasing shots that also portray size and dimension. Photography is such a battle for me as I do it all myself - arranging, shooting and editing. This itself is an artform. I never wanted to be a photographer I must confess! If ever in doubt, please send me a note and I will do my best to take a not-so-flattering self portrait of me wearing the piece in question. I usually am able to answer you within a few hours at most.

The highlights of the 2011 Vogue September "Fall Fashion Extravaganza" issue - all 758 pages, bigger than my hometown phone book - are flashbacks to the late 1970s and early 80s, vivid 'color blocking,' mod Mad Men inspired looks, and all around I must say, I miss last year's issue. I will admit that these images and campaigns are a bit more fun the more I look at them as the hue is more saturated - the color more vivid. Couture is always entertaining and intriguing on some level (take the Prada campaign); but when you dive a bit deeper into the ready-to-wear lines, you may come to find yourself saying: "I'm simply not ready to wear chartreuse bell-bottom tweed pants." But through it all, I was able to find some winning adverts and looks. Alas, a lot of regrets as well, some images too garish to even waste time searching for on the web and need not be mentioned. (Ok, ok, I have to mention the Céline faux bois pant/shirt because I wanted to gouge my eyes out. I feel betrayed, Céline).

Surprisingly though, I was neither impressed with the looks nor the campaigns themselves of a lot of the big houses: Michael Kors, Versace, DKNY, Calvin Klein, Chanel, or Salvatore Ferragamo for example, and nothing from the big Nordstrom spread.

Above I placed my dearest love Valentino and I will also end with Valentino. Their haute couture and ready wear Fall/Winter lines are by far the most compelling, inspired and intriguing as far as I'm concerned.

Happy birthday-anniversary to my other half.

It was four short (and long) years ago that I founded Lee Ohio Designs and began working as a full-time artist. Over these forty-eight months my work has transformed quite a bit and I've gone through a metamorphosis myself. Without you, my wonderful clients, and the boutiques and galleries who carry my work - and will carry my work in the future! - none of this would be possible. I won't lie and say that this isn't hard, as it very much is at times. It takes a lot out of me on many, many levels. But I love what I do and I hope it shows. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I am a collector; I'm mere steps from hoarder, really, if you ask Daniel. I enjoy things. Small curiosities: tiny works of art, old photographs and tin types, vintage postcards and cabinet cards, crystals and mineral specimens, porcelain salters and eggcups, anything jadite, Carnival Glass, odd plants, useless parts of lamps that I've taken apart ... Yes, I collect it all.

Above is a snapshot of my glass and porcelain salter and small dish collection. A few of these pieces are FireKing/Anchor Hocking, Fenton and Akro Agate. Others are new, some are hand painted gifts from Turkey, while many are unmarked and unknown mysteries.

Here is part of my FireKing by Anchor Hocking collection. Most are jadite in color and the pattern is 'shell' (not 'swirl,' note the scalloped edges - these are often confused). Also I've a few chili bowls in jadite and pasta 'shell' bowls in and peach luster, various platters and a mixing bowl. Additionally my demitasse collection in peach luster. A good place to look for your own depression-ware pieces is Jadite Kate.

A variety of "air plants," epiphytes, in vintage French jadite egg cups, sea urchin & glass container. Epiphytes are amazing because they require no soil to live, only the moisture and nutrients in the air (you must mist them when they live in your home).

One of my many, many containers of succulent specimens. This particular plant is in bloom, producing a ten inch stalk with a cluster of blossoms that will last for weeks and even months.

I create these picture frame clusters all over the house. This particular one is in the guest bath next to the vanity. My favorite part about these arrangements is that as they may start small, but as you acquire new art and new frames, they are easy to grow and easy to rearrange. The frames are manageable in size and inexpensive. I've found most at second-hand stores, craft stores or discount shops. I enjoy the haphazard yet collective feel of the arrangements and they allow you to bring together many different types of works. Included here: Anthropologie wallpaper samples (free!), Yellena artwork, antique postcards, tin print, and Matou en Peluche artwork.

The work within the Autumn 11 Collection/preview is a continuation of what I've been pushing and pulling within myself already. My obsession with small details and subtle color transitions and adoration for 'the collection.' Expect to see more dripping saltwater pearl and pyrite (my new favorite combination for negative space), vibrant ombré and delicate degradé compositions and exceptional high-carat gold accents and mixed metal arrangements.

I will address this briefly because I don't want it to be a big point or a discussion. And I assure you, this is not that situation, or a way to open up a dialogue to point fingers or name names, as I will not do so. But I need to say it aloud, or write it, as I have been holding it in for far too long. I am becoming progressively aware of certain aspects of my work and in particular cases, my entire aesthetic, becoming increasingly evident in the work of others. This is the nature of business and having an online presence and when you are not an inventor, but an innovator and an artist as I am, it is difficult to know when the line was crossed, but easy to see once it has been.

I am coming to terms with this in my own way as I am not, in most cases, a confrontational person. I would like my clients and followers to know that I am constantly working, innovating and transforming. But, at times it is disheartening and I won't lie, it does affect me on a personal level, a financial level as I have lost clients to others, but most devastatingly - this type of action undermines my creative plane. The act of creativity, novel thought, born in one's mind and translated through to the hand is such a complicated process already. I am constantly amazed I can complete any task with the pressures, pushes and pulls - the mean reds - of everyday life getting in the way of the transmission process. Often it does; more so now.

This post isn't about other designers. It is about my own life and my own struggle as an artist. I am not an angry or resentful person, or I try so much not to be. I simply want to see come to fruition what I have spent four years building upon a combined nine years of education and specialized work.
I simply want to do what I love to do.

On Sunday (dimanche), the flower shops and stalls close and the weekly bird market opens, claiming the alley ways. A rainbow of parakeets, doves, lovebirds, golden canaries and finches of every variety imaginable plus many more can be found. Dozens of pigeons can be found as well, interlopers enjoying the dropped seed. Cages of every size and shape can be found alongside sacks of seed, millet, food trays and toys, medicine and just about everything you'd need to raise a very happy Parisian bird.

Included within the post are photographs I lovingly snapped on my recent trip to Paris this past July and a few (Parisian) French and French Canadian nursery rhymes (comptines) and children's songs (chansons enfantines) about birds. **If you are not familiar with it, Alouette, gentille alouette (Lark, nice lark) is hands down probably the most violent children's song I've ever heard. I know there is a history of it being linked to a factory song and now it is used to teach children parts of the body, some versions have repeating parts and they point to them as they sing - but wow! very disturbing!

Something has come into our back yard and killed two of our three large water oaks. Within only a few weeks - two, three at most - they went from being alive and full of bright foliage to shriveled up with the bark peeling, turning red. It started with just a part of one tree's leaves withering to a dark, olive green - and then a second patch - then a third. Before I knew it both trees looked as if they did in December, leaves dead yet still clinging on through the cold, though it was the first of July.

At present, the third water oak in the cluster seems to be holding his own. Our live oak in the center of the yard, beautiful and sprawling, housing my orchids, seems dandy as well.

I am desperately sad to see them (and their glorious shade) go.

However, at this point, desperate to see them go I am.
For I am afraid of this blight, or whatever caused their quick demise, spreading to the other trees.

The process though, to remove them, has turned out to take longer than their deaths.

Recently I was filling out a rather long interview-esque application which contained questions about me and my work as an artist/designer. I joked that the application was so large and some of the questions so personal and in depth that if I were to enter therapy in the near future I would just hand a copy to the the doctor and he would have all the information. Two of the questions, in particular, came to mind as being pertinent to my new blog presentation, and were to the effect of "describe your best day" and "describe your worst day." With my new format here I thought it very appropriate to share my answer(s) with you.

I spent a long time thinking about these two questions and the use of intense comparatives to describe two specific days in my life. Without a doubt there have been exceptionally wonderful days and desperately difficult days in my life. When I matriculated college or had my first gallery show, or the first time I had a wholesale jewelry order over $5,000, certainly these are days that glow neon in my memory.

In stark contrast I had a number of friends commit suicide in high school, or that sad day one April when my grandfather died, and then the stormy night our house flooded in Mississippi a couple years ago; those were the darker times. The reason I shy away from intense descriptors like “best day/worst day” is that I’ve learned that things can always be worse. Inevitably though, with time, they will turn around for the better. I have learned to find pleasure in the little things: I garden almost everyday, I play with our dogs (who I treat like my children, because my heart knows no better), and I sit by the pond I’ve built every morning and try to think of something I’m grateful for (this clears my mind to begin the work).

Some of the moments I’m most fond of in my life thus far are the smallest: driving over the Talmadge bridge in Savannah, alone, listening to Lois Armstrong’s "La Vie en Rose," or a particular Sunday morning with the pups and Dan.

It’s not the loudest days that burn the brightest.

As many of you know, I went to Paris with a long time friend and Lee Ohio client. Along with touring Versailles, the Louvre, shopping and just enjoying Paris in general, she was able to give me some great insight into my company from the outside perspective of a loyal client. After much discussion over some of the best Italian food I've ever had (ha!), yummy pastis and croissants galore, we came to the conclusion that I'm not really using my blog. Thus I've decided to open up a bit more and show you behind the curtain; delve into the magic of Lee Ohio and show you what makes me, well, me. I will do my best to keep my (from the inside perspective, charming) self-deprecating humor at a minimum and also to stay clear of the hot topics of religion and politics. Though as to the second portion of the statement, I can make no guarantees about the latter half as I am somewhat of a passionate junkie. But I must admit, my life, on a day to day basis, is well - kind of boring. And I like to write in free-form thought, with lots of hyphens, comas, parentheses and semi-colons. And with lots of digressions. So, I'm not sure yet how I'm going to (clumsily) write about it... or how I'll actually get through it if I were to actually stumble upon it, a topic. But I digress.

So, I went to Paris. And now, I am back. It is hard to come home. Don't misunderstand me, I love my home: my house, my Dan, my Howie and Cookie and the Freds (doves) and Butters ('keet), and the fishies. But Paris. Or anywhere that the responsibilities aren't there and the day-to-day doesn't exist. I'm readjusting as best I can but I must say it is hard and bittersweet. I am happy to be home. I missed home. But I miss the architecture, the couture fashion, fresh food everyday and the plan of something exciting to see. Po-dunk, Mississippi, just isn't quite the same. As I said to dear my dear T (who I also miss so much), "We'll always have Versailles."

I've finally completed the small project of reupholstering two of the kitchen table chairs. The other two have a lovely twined seat and I'll simply add cushions. I selected a rich chartreuse and chocolate brown toile and upholstery tacks. It was a simple job since the seat cushions were in good condition and I simply needed to add some new fabric.

To keep with the rustic, reclaimed-look of the hand made wooden table,

for one of the chairs I selected a darkened oxidized brass tacks.

For the other, I chose a brushed matte golden brass tack strip. I think the slight variances from one chair to the other make the entire set look like a well loved, country French antique made from materials on-hand as opposed to mass produced set.

Subtle sunday

My beautiful, shiny new computer is here (yay!) and I'm slowly moving my backed up files into it and getting back into the swing of things. I have a back log of petite luxe designs and lushiously long earrings to photograph and edit to get them ready for the website. Have I mentioned that I have woefully been neglecting my .com site? *le sigh* So much to do! Why can't there be three of me? Or at least a one perfectly punctual, fully energized, migraine-free, technology-savvy me?

So here's an update of what I've been up to. Peektured (thank you Miss Mairin) above is the opulent freshwater and saltwater pearl (hand-knotted on silk thread, complete with raw silk and velvet bow) Hydrangea (Queen of Pearls) Corsage.

Here's a fabulous treasury featuring my Plenilunio (full moon) brooch called Wonderful Sunday. Wonderful Sunday indeed! I just love that I'm included with one of my favorite shops, Sweet Petula. Everything from her shop is yummy. And just look at that fabulous elk leather ruffle tote by Stacy Leigh - to die for!

A favorite design that has done well this Autumn thus far from the Petite Luxe collection is the Pod earring set. The previous version employed oxidized copper (berry red) accents while this edition is all matte black. I will be reintroducing the berry red accented pairs in the near future if you've been waiting for them. These pairs go fast because they're fabulously priced at just $25 per pair, are solid sterling (unless noted with the fuchsia copper accents) and make great gifts for the holiday season. They also come in the signature gift box like all the designs. I've introduced a new line of boxes for Holiday 2010. Check them out below.

Above is a (not so good) photograph I snapped with my BlackBerry of a Lee Ohio Signature piece that I'm working on for my First Frost 2010 collection. It is comprised of naturally occurring saltwater keishi pearls, natural Tahitian keishi pearls and an uber-luxe and rare rainbow Sea of Cortez Mabe pearl. Solid sterling in bright silvery and matte charcoal patinas will be accented with solid 18k yellow gold. I'm also going to add in some natural Australian opal for added sparkle and opulence. The bracelet is titled Yvaine (stardust) and should post the beginning of this week.

Lastly is a a pic of a new pair of earrings inspired by the Film Noir era titled Stanwyck. This long dramatic pair of shaded sterling (from brushed matte silver to moody and dark charcoal sterling). It is comprised of artfully arranged black spinel, tourmalated quartz, ashen moonstone, gem-grade labradorite (with blue flash), milk glass-like moonstone and rainbow moonstone with natural chalcedony. Long at over two and a quarter inches in length. Stanwyck will post this week.

I must express my deepest gratitude to shopSCAD, the gallery & boutique of my alma mater, the Savannah College of Art and Design. The boutique features artwork and designs of SCAD students, faculty and alumni. ShopSCAD has locations in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, and a gallery on their campus in Lacoste, France. My work has been represented in all shopSCAD locations for over two years and it continues to be an integral part in why Lee Ohio is a success.

ShopSCAD has launched their first paper and e-catalog and I am beyond honored to be included within it as well. Thank you to Amy Zurcher, the.... creator/dreamer of? ...manager? ...curator? all of the above and and more of shopSCAD. (ShopSCAD Goddess should probably be the title she lobbies for.) She does everything in the boutique from organizing this catalog to hand-selecting all the pieces from each artist that enters the shop to press releases and more. Recently she also was a guest curator on Etsy's blog the Storque and wrote about the many talented SCAD artists on Etsy. You can read the story on the Storque or a previous blog post.

Pluto as a planet and Triceratops as a dinosaur; add to that list my beloved Macbook pro as a functioning computer and a failure of science. Now I'm not here to debate the merits of Macs versus Windows-based computers (or desktops versus laptops)... I'm just here to whine. And then whine a little more. I live in a home with a PC-lover and I'm a Mac person. That can make our coversations around technology as confrontational and volatile as if one of us were a right-wing conservative and the other a lefty liberal. But I digress. It has been extremely difficult to photograph, edit and list and new jewelry for the past week and I have a very sad face. Patience (I'm telling myself that).

I like cute food.

Well, I should qualify that statement. I like cute food that tastes good. I have a dear friend who simply adores marzipan. Marzipan can be beautiful, cute and at times even adorable... but I'm sorry Holly, it is never, never ever tasty. Sushi on the other hand is very, very cute and since you can fill these little rice-seaweed-wraps with almost anything and everything you can create something that nearly anyone (except my Nana) will find pleasing to eat.

Today as a late lunch I made a variation of an avocado roll and added red pepper for a bit of color, crunch and spice. I've discovered microwavable sticky rice that makes the process even more easy and quick. Though if you are going to make it for more than one I suggest making the rice the old-fashioned way (or with a rice cooker) because otherwise it will get expensive.

It has taken a very long time to get the hang of rolling the sushi rolls. Personally, I find making half-rolls is easier. Plus, in this fashion they are bite-sized instead of filling your whole mouth. But don't fret if you can't get your rolls to close perfectly (or at all), or your knife is too dull and squishes the pieces into sushi-pancakes, or your rice isn't sticky enough (I say these all from experience). To me, the most wonderful aspect of sushi is that it doesn't matter how it looks, it all tastes the same - wonderful.

Oh, tee-hee, the sushi plate (complete with Mickey Mouse) is part of a set which my Mum brought back for us from a trip she took to Disney World. And the cloth napkin is a lovey Mireio original!

I'm proud to announce that I will participate in the 2010 Art Walk in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, in September. I was honored to be invited by Salon Boudreaux (owned by the fabulous Cathy Boudreaux). I will be set up in front of the salon at 626 Washington Avenue in the heart of historic downtown Ocean Springs. If you have any questions you can call Salon Boudreaux at 228-872-8247. The Art Walk will take place on Saturday the 4th of September from 10am to 4pm.

In addition, my application to the Peter Anderson Festival was approved! This is quite an honor as this is a juried event and the jewelry category is very competitive. This will be my second year participating in the festival and I'm eager for November to come! The 2010 show will take place the Saturday the 6th and and Sunday the 7th of November. I've never much cared for British clothing company Boden. I've never really understood why I got the catalog in the mail. The simple silhouettes were nice but I always found the bright, cavity-inducing colors and hallucinogenic patterns off-putting. Needless to say, nothing I would ever have been comfortable wearing - because I would have been sure everyone would have been staring at me (unless in Miami Beach or some other tropical "loud" locale.) But the Boden Autumn 2010 catalog arrived yesterday and before bed last night I fluffed my pillow and curled up (ready to be disappointed again) and instead I found myself oohing and aahing. And wanting.

I've been wanting a headboard for our master bed for awhile now. After the success of my chair re-upholstery project from earlier this month I decided to give it a shot. I've admired this one from Urban Outfitters for awhile now but the design was too simple for the high price; it seemed like something I could do. With some suggestions from my mother-in-law and some hands-on-help from my Mum (and the Godsend that is the nailhead trim) - here is the result. Click on the photo (twice) to zoom in to see the swirling detail of the slightly shimmery fabric.
We decided to make it a little wider so when we update our queen to a king we can still use it. The best part is, when I'm tired of this fabric, it will be so simple to pull the tack strip out and cover it again. Quite easy all around - except on the hands. I recommend gloves.
(Oh, and that adorable pale blue accent pillow above? It's a Mireio original. Love it!)
