I replanted and refreshed a couple of succulent gardens I have around the house. The container gardens are comprised of a variety of succulent plants - shown here are different varieties of Echeveria. They are commonly known as hens and chickens. To create the gardens I use a variety of media. In each pot I place a base of rough, large "egg" rocks. The next layer is a layer pea-sized gravel. I then add a few inches of top soil; a regular potting soil mix works well. I'm a fan of anything organic. I gently arrange my succulents and then place a pattern of single-layered rock around the plants to create a desert-like appearance.
Succulents love sunlight, are drought tolerant and enjoy excellent drainage. Many succulents are very exotic in appearance and when arranged together can create interesting, almost alien-like miniature landscapes. They are also very common and can be found in nearly any garden department.
