I'm in search of the perfect croquet set. I want one similar to the one I grew up playing with at my grandparents' house. A set with all-wood mallets and hard resin or ceramic balls and metal wickets. This shouldn't be so hard to find. Why are the bocce sets beautifully made while a new croquet set has a mass-produced feel? So many I see have plastic capped-mallets with plastic balls and cheap wickets. I'd like a nice wooden stand too - beautiful enough to leave in the living room next to the back door.I found this lovely one, pictured above, from Restoration Hardware (I love the colors) but alas, it is sold out. There is a nice on L.L. Bean, too, but the stand is sold separately and the balls sound cheaply made in the product reviews.
Time to visit eBay, I guess.

My parents bought a set for the ranch when I was in early middle school - I will try to remember to ask them where they got it, because it is beautiful, & I think just what you are looking for.
Check out Oakleywoods.com They have some very nice sets.
