Oh dear. Yes, I said that I this was one of my most favorite issues of Vogue. Ever. And it is true. Look at how mad I've gone with images! And this is what made the cut!
The entire collection of Erik Madigan Heck's work for Neiman Marcus is brilliant. Simply put I could have a written an entire gushing post just on "The Art of Fashion" for 2012. Tom Ford for Neiman Marcus above is by far one one of the most lovely images I have ever seen. On a side note, the chasing-the-green-fairy-image also gets my 2012 award for 'Best Use of a Couch/Chair'. Ferragamo comes in a close second to snatching that award with Kate Moss draped à la
Olympia on chaise (image below). But, back to the topic at hand, one can view the entire "Art of Fashion" collection by Heck on the artist's site (link on the bottom of this post).
What I enjoy about this issue of
Vogue the most is the entire feeling of 'the retrospective' in both
content and campaigns. Yes, this is the 120th anniversary issue so the magazine and certain designers did what you expect in that comforting way. I'm not speaking in terms of the fashion pieces, the designs themselves, but the
flavors of the campaigns. Versace ads always have that Versace-feel. The same can be said for Alexander McQueen or Céline. Some could say the same about Valentino but I feel as if the work is continuously growing at such a rapid trajectory towards the fantastic, the campaigns always surprise (and delight-- me!). The September
Vogue has a certain ebb-and-flow and this issue is no different.
Though I may enjoy the work in general, I was a little let down (comparatively to years past) to the campaigns of Fendi, Givenchy, Prada, and especially Lanvin. Lanvin's campaign from last year was so fantastic. Looking at last year's
The September Issue post, Lanvin's campaign was probably my favorite. This year was so "blah" in comparison. In my opinion, Salvatore Ferragamo, Dolce & Gabbana, and Louis Vuitton had the most surprising and successful campaigns. I went and looked at all the images that spanned all the magazines and each is uniquely imaginative with a great narrative and well-directed.
There were more, sadly, that I really liked, but do to the lack of space
just couldn't be listed. (I don't want to break anything by posting even more images than this!).
Hermès and Mulberry were two campaigns
that had discernible narratives or consistent themes that I really
enjoyed. I'm posting images of last year's Lanvin and some of the other
campaigns I liked in my Pinterest 'MODE' folder.
... and did anyone catch the modern
Breakfast at Tiffany's rainy alley reference in Tiffany & Co.'s new campaign? A lovely little surprise.
